Color Grading with Curves

Most people severely underutilize the potential of the Curves adjustment… especially for color grading… and this class will prove it. Standard S-curves won’t get you very far if you want impactful color and contrast from this powerful adjustment. In this class we’re going to focus on the forgotten ways we can use curves for stylized effects, color correction, or enhancing mood in your images. All so you can walk away with a deep understanding of curves rather than it feeling like a black box. You’ll even learn a new way of thinking about color so the adjustments you make feel intentional rather than a guess. We’ll start with how you can use curves to give your image a better “base” of color before you even begin with other adjustments. Save the Shot: Working with High ISO Noise Reduction

Anyone can remove noise. Keeping the image believable is the key.

Every photographer has that image. It's important, emotionally worth keeping, but for whatever reason you had to shoot it at an ISO that leaves it grainy, blotchy, or unusable at full size. In this session, we will tackle how to handle those higher ISO images. You'll follow one noisy, real-world image from raw file to finished, print-ready result, learning not just which sliders to pull, but why noise reduction is a series of decisions, not a single fix.

We'll start by looking at the same image taken at various ISOs to understand the difference between luminance noise and color noise, why they need to be treated separately for better results and how to approach testing noise reduction tools on the various ISO levels. By looking at how to test when noise is actually a problem, we can put ourselves in a better position to get the best images possible.

From there, we'll work through the various approaches to fix the images. From a first pass using RAW processor sliders, to a heavier pass with plugins or AI-powered denoising tools, and a final finishing stage using selective masking in Photoshop to preserve detail exactly where it matters, like eyes and texture, while smoothing everything else. Along the way, you'll see how output size and ISO levels change your approach, since noise that's invisible on screen can become obvious when we crop or enlarge an image.

From Screen to Wall: Printing an image as an 8"x10" and as a 24"x30"

Your image looks perfect on screen. You have invested time and effort into capturing the shot just right, and your edits are flawless. Now, as you prepare to print the image, a question arises: will it hold up when printed? After all, a print is only as good as the file behind it, and a file that works for an 8x10 print isn't necessarily suitable for a 24x30.

Get ready for a fun and fast-paced session where we dive into the project of producing a print at multiples sizes: a beautiful 8x10 that you might print on your own printer and preparing a stunning 24x30 that will come to life from a professional lab.

We start by exploring the basic workflow, focusing on printing requirements. This includes working with primary and print files, dealing with images of various sizes, key resolution calculations, sharpening techniques, effective file management, and printer settings. Our first print will have us focus on the workflow and process to produce the smaller 8x10 that might be printed on your personal printer.

After we've worked with the smaller size, we shift our focus to the larger print. Here, we'll talk about the needs of the larger prints (color, sharpening, etc.) and learn how to incorporate a valuable quality control tool (It also saves time and money too). The test strip. These have long been a staple for photographers in darkrooms, and we'll adapt them for digital printing to ensure you have a reliable approach for creating that impressive full-sized print.

To wrap up our session, we focus on practical tips on outsourcing those larger prints to a professional lab. You'll learn about lab requirements, choosing the right papers, creating reference prints, utilizing the lab's ICC profiles, and important questions to ask before you have the print made. By the end of our time together, you'll feel confident and ready to bring that gorgeous print to life and showcase it proudly on your wall!

Using AI with your Photography

There are AI tools inside Photoshop right now that can save you hours and rescue images you'd have written off completely, and the question Glyn gets asked more than any other is simply where they fit. So, rather than run through a list of clever tricks on unrelated pictures, Glyn will take one single image and build it all the way through to a finished piece, using AI at the points where it genuinely earns its place.

He'll start with a portrait that has real problems. Shot in a space that was far too tight, with a background that doesn't work and things in the frame he wishes weren't there. Exactly the sort of file most of us would quietly give up on.

From there Glyn will work in order. Making the selections, opening the scene up so it breathes, dealing with the distractions, then building the light and atmosphere around the subject so the finished image says what he wanted it to say on the day. Glyn will talk you through every decision in sequence, and why each one comes when it does, because the order really does matter.

He'll also be straight with you about where these tools still get things wrong, how to spot it before a client does, and how to keep your own style front and centre, so the picture still looks like yours and not like everybody else's.

You will learn how to plan an edit before you touch anything, so AI becomes part of a workflow rather than a scattering of random fixes
You will learn how Generative Fill and Generative Expand fit into a proper retouching sequence, and where in that sequence they belong

Where Camera Raw Stops, Photoshop Starts

Camera Raw is inside Photoshop, and it is far more capable than most people give it credit for. The trouble is that a lot of us either rush through it to get to the layers, or we stay in there far too long trying to force it to do things it was never built for. Knowing where that line sits is what separates a slow, frustrating edit from a clean one.

So Glyn will follow one picture from the very beginning to the very end. He starts out on location for an environmental portrait, where he'll show you how he reads the light that's there, how he works with somebody who isn't used to being photographed, and the camera decisions he's making with one eye already on the edit to come.

Then Glyn will open that same raw file and take it all the way through. Camera Raw first, working in a set order to build the foundation the whole picture depends on, using the tools most people walk straight past, before he shows you the precise point where Camera Raw has given all it can and the image needs to go across to Photoshop as a layered file. Retouching, dodging and burning, and building light and atmosphere until the picture matches what he saw in his head when he pressed the shutter.

You'll also see how the two talk to each other, so nothing is ever baked in too early, and you can go back and change your mind later without starting again.

One shoot, one raw file, one continuous flow, so you leave with a working process you can apply to your own pictures rather than a handful of tips you'll never quite know where to use.

Creating Custom Brushes for Retouching and Effects

The session covers document setup, working with guides, selecting and enhancing images, integrating text, and using layers, masks and adjustment techniques to create a balanced, eye-catching design. Piet Van den Eynde

Piet Van den Eynde is a Belgian photography educator based in Ghent, and the founder of Piet's Pixel Academy (www.pixelacademy.photo). Piet has nearly two decades of hands-on experience in teaching Lightroom Classic, Camera Raw and Photoshop.

He is the author of several books on image editing and a regular contributor to international photography magazines. Composite vs. AI: Building the Perfect Wide-Angle Portrait
Wide-angle environmental portraits with flash look incredible, but there's a catch. Use a wide lens and keep your flashes out of frame, and they end up so far from your subject that the light turns hard and weak instead of soft and flattering. My fix: put the flashes right in the frame, shoot a second "clean" backplate without them, and combine everything in Photoshop.

In this session, I'll build the shot from setup to final composite: the on-location lighting, the two exposures you need, and the full Photoshop workflow to blend them. Then we'll put that against the AI alternative — removing the flashes with Content-Aware Fill or Generative Fill instead. Both look great from a distance. Zoom in, though, and the AI version starts to fall apart, especially on higher-megapixel files. Compositing fundamentals still matter, even now!

- How to plan and shoot a wide-angle portrait with off-camera flash positioned in-frame
- How to shoot a clean backplate and use it to remove the flash from your final image
- A complete Photoshop compositing workflow, from layering to blending to final polish
- Where generative AI tools succeed — and where they still fall short — versus manual compositing

Gradients: The Secret to Creating Depth in Photoshop

One of the biggest challenges in photography is that we are trying to represent a three-dimensional world in a two-dimensional photograph. In the process, much of the natural sense of depth is lost. Gradients are one of the most powerful—and often underutilized—tools for restoring that depth and guiding the viewer's eye through an image.

In this session, you'll discover how gradients can be used to subtly shape light, control tonal transitions, and create a stronger sense of atmosphere and dimension. Whether you photograph landscapes, architecture, wildlife, portraits, florals, abstracts, or anything in between, gradient techniques can enhance your images without looking artificial. You'll also learn the difference between Photoshop's Gradient Tool and Gradient Adjustment Layer, when to use each, and which gradient techniques are actually useful for photographers.

This session is suitable for photographers of all skill levels who want to create more depth, mood, and visual impact in their images.

Is this different than the previous Photoshop Virtual Summits?

This is the eighth Photoshop Virtual Summit, and we're bringing back your favorite instructors and some new faces – with all new content. As you know, Photoshop continues to evolve with new tools and functions, and we'll cover everything that's new, and key tips and techniques that are always important to learn. You may see some class names that sound familiar, but each session is newly created to show you the latest techniques – and this time all the classes are project-based, so you can see the techniques in action.

Where is the event being held?

On your laptop. Or your desktop computer, mobile device or any other means you use for online viewing. This event is 100% online.

Is there a cost to watch the classes?

The classes are free to watch for a 48 hour period after they are first released. For example, the class released at 8am on Monday will be available to watch until Wednesday at 8am, so each class will expire on the hour starting on Wednesday. While free access to classes expires, the optional VIP Pass provides lifetime access to all classes plus many exclusive bonuses (see below).

Do I need to download any software to take part in the Summit?

No, as long as you have a current browser, you are good to go! (Chrome is recommended but not required)

Who is this Summit best suited to?

We have sessions aimed at all levels of Photoshop users, from beginners to veteran users.
And with the optional VIP Pass, you have lifetime access to watch the classes, so down the road you can watch sessions that might be a little over your head at the time of the Summit.

What time does it start?

Technically, each day starts at 8am EDT, but that's just when the first class is made available. Each session is available for 48 hours, so you don't need to worry about getting up at some crazy time of day to watch "live". You won't miss anything by watching later. Each day at around 7am EDT you'll receive an email with a link to that day's classes. (VIP Members can watch the classes at any time, even after the 48-hour period, and get class files, class notes and other bonuses).

How do I figure out my time zone?

It doesn't really matter, because although classes are released at specific times, they remain available for 48 hours. And you won't miss anything if you aren't watching at a specific time. But since you asked, times are shown in Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) - and here is a Time Zone Calculator.

Who is running this event?

It's the brainchild of and is run by Dave Cross LLC (Dave Cross and Marlene Cross). Not a big company with lots of employees and support staff - just the two of us. This is not an Adobe-run event!

What if I can't make the event on September 14 - 18th?

The VIP Access Pass gives you lifetime access to all the sessions, along with extra benefits including session notes, practice exercises and downloadable bonus files. If you miss any class - or want to rewatch your favorite sessions - the VIP Pass has you covered.

What is the VIP Pass?

For people who can't watch all the classes during the week, or who want the option to re-watch their favorite classes, we have the All Access VIP Pass. This gives lifetime access to watch (and re-watch) the recordings of all classes, plus exclusive extras including class notes, downloadable project files and bonus videos. The VIP Pass is available for $159 ($99 Early Bird price until September 14th at 1pm EDT).

Will the classes be captioned?

The videos will be delivered through video hosting services that give viewers the option to turn on auto-generated captions.

Can't I just bookmark the videos to watch later?

We use a hosting service and embedding code that makes it pointless to bookmark the page. Once the 48 hour viewing period has expired, the videos can only be viewed within the VIP Member Area.
